READING GLASSES FOR KIDS
Reading is a task being taught at younger ages than ever before.
If done for long periods of time, it is a task of confinement and stress for children. Whichever method or strategy the teacher uses for the beginning reader, the child has to maintain a still body, a still head and accurate focusing of the eyes.
For many school aged kids, the physical task creates stress in the body and eyes.
As a result of being contained and entering into this stressful event of looking at close by visual symbols, the body enters into a mode telling the child, “let’s get out of here”.
When the children aren’t ready developmentally for reading, this challenge is enough to make them avoid reading all together or create adverse visual consequences.
Fortunately, there are certain lenses that can lower the stress of the reading task to make it easier for the young learners. Contrary to most glasses prescriptions, these type of reading glasses aren’t designed simply to make a blurry image clear again.
It is an outdated approach to limit the power of lenses to this benefit alone.
These lenses – often called performance or stress relieving lenses – will reduce the chances of entering into a “flight” mode from the confining desk work required. They will often reduce the physical and visual stress that is accompanied by desk work and reading.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I know if my child needs glasses?
The best and only way we can find out if your child needs glasses is to see them for an eye exam. At Northwest Vision Development Center, our Optometrist will perform several tests to determine if your child needs glasses. If he/she does need glasses we will help you find the right pair for them.
How does the eye doctor figure out prescriptions in babies and toddlers?
When your child comes to us for an eye exam, our Optometrist will play a video of your (or your child's choosing) selected from youtube and have them watch it. While they sit and watch, the Optometrist will shine a retinoscope into the pupil. With your child still focused on the video, we will introduce new lenses in front of each eye to best determine the prescription they may need. This is a diagnostic test called retinoscopy and we can perform this while whether your child's eyes are dilated or not.
Should my kids wear sunglasses outside?
Yes! Just like you put sunscreen on to protect the skin, a good way to protect the eyes from ultraviolet damage is to cover them up with sunglasses. The lenses we sell at Northwest Vision Development Center have UV protection.
Why do some small children wear bifocals?
Bifocals might be prescribed for one of two reasons.
When do most kids start needing glasses?
The age when children need glasses vary from person to person. There are many people who don't need corrective lenses until they reach their 40's but others might start to wear glasses as an infant.
Are eye problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism genetic?
Yes. They are partly genetic and partly environmental (due to lifestyle). We don't know which plays a larger role.
